Does anyone know if roasted in the shell peanuts provide the same
fiber and cholesterol benifits as frequently described for "nuts" in
various articles on cholesterol?

Visuals guides in shopping
A couple of months ago, searching in vain for an item on supermarket shelves, I
became frustrated because I could not clearly make out the words on the
overhead signs which were located halfway along the aisles from the end where I
was standing. The foldout ‘toddler seat’ in the shopping cart did have a
directory of the store’s products by aisle number, however, the directory was
in too small a font for me to read. The list had also been compresed down into
a tight space because half the placard was taken up by a photo of one of the
market’s officials, and the remainder by promotional printing.
One of the supermarket’s employees gave me the location of the item I sought,
which solved my problem. In our brief conversation, I learned that it was not
unusual for customers to express frustration about their inability to bring
into useful focus the overhead signs and the shopping cart directory – as
well as product title, content weight and price labels displayed along a
shelves’ edges. I suggested that larger lettering and attractive contrasts
would help customers find what they wanted and have aesthetic value.
Several weeks later, I noted that the store’s aisle signs had been replaced:
the new signs were larger, easier to read from the end of the aisle, and had
higher contrast of letters-to-background.
This past week I had a similar experience in the store of another supermarket
chain, this time talking with the store manager. In both instances, the store’s
staff was courteous and impressed me as receptive to suggestions.
The Healthy People 2000 report (issued in 1990) includes the following national
health objective 9.20 (Category: Unintentional Injuries): "Increase to at
least 30 the number of States that have design standards for signs, signals,
markings, lighting and other characteristics of the roadway environment to
improve the visual stimuli and protect the safety of older drivers and
pedestrians." The latest (1999) status report does not indicate progress on
9.20.
"Safety" of the elderly may not be the primary purpose of supermarket (or
shopping mall, healthcare entity, department store, etc.) directories, signs
and other visuals, nevertheless, high volume and/or density foot traffic in
public places often includes the visually or physically impaired (any age) as
well as the elderly. It makes sense to adopt goals and standards which will
provide and measure progress toward easy-read-at-distance signs and signals in
stores, malls and other locations where people move about.
The private citizen who experiences what is described above can play an
important role in ‘advancing’ a communities’ technology and conveniences by
bringing the inadequacy to the attention of the onsite manager of a store,
mall, etc., and to the State planning agency that prepares related technical
standards and oversight. It might help to quote the above Healthy People 2000
national health objective 9.20 — and ‘wonder’ about its status?

Don't buy from QVC
Recently we purchased a Pilates exercise machine from QVC. Their web site
said the unit IS 18" for easier access etc. When it arrived it was at
ground level. We contacted QVC regarding this matter. Thery treated us
like we were stupid and said that we had to buy an additional stand to make
it 18" high. When we pointed out that their website says the unit IS 18"
high and they don’t even list the additiobnal stand they tried to play it
off as a mis-entry. Being an experienced web builder I wondered why they
hadn’t fixed the obviously fraudlent (IMO) ad copy if it was an honest
mistake. (It would only take a few minutes to fix it if it was an
accidental oversite) No response so far. It has been 4 days since we first
pointed out the problem to them. They continue to act in a patronizing and
fraudulent manner.
Exact interpretations of the word fraud are my own opinion.
Sincerely,
A future ex-customer
